Got questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be fit to join?
No. Boxing training is one of the best ways to get fit, but you do not need a baseline level of fitness to start. Coaches will allow you to work at your own pace while you build up your stamina and strength.
Do I have to spar or fight?
No. Sparring and competing are entirely optional. Many members join solely for the fitness, discipline, and technical training. If you do wish to spar eventually, coaches will only allow it when you are technically ready, and it is always heavily supervised with full protective gear.
What equipment do I need for my first session?
For your first few sessions, comfortable gym clothing (t-shirt, shorts/tracksuit bottoms, and trainers) is all you need. You can borrow gloves and a skipping rope to start. If you decide to stay, your first purchases should be a custom-fitted gum shield and your own hand wraps.
What age can you start boxing?
Broadside Warriors accepts children from the age of 10 for competitive training in the juniors sessions. There is no upper age limit for fitness training, though there are strict age limits for competing as an amateur.
Are the coaches qualified?
Yes. As a club affiliated with England Boxing, we require our coaches to hold official coaching qualifications. This also means our coaches have up-to-date First Aid training, Safeguarding certificates, and enhanced DBS checks.
Is it safe?
Amateur boxing clubs prioritise safety above all else. Training is highly structured, and the rules of amateur boxing are strictly enforced. Protective gear (including headguards and 14oz–16oz gloves) is mandatory for any contact work, and sparring only occurs under the direct supervision of a qualified coach.
Are women and girls welcome?
Yes. Amateur boxing is highly inclusive and Broadside Warriors run mixed-gender sessions.
